Beginning daddyhood

Today is Father’s Day, which seems the perfect day to begin our journey. We’ll start with Molly, who enjoys pride of place as The One Who Came First. Nothing that comes after this, she wants you to understand, would have happened without her intervention and support. I have to agree.

The next in line is Mia, who really came uninvited to the party, at least according to Molly. Molly sees Mia as nothing more than an interloper trying to usurp attention and treats from their rightful place. Mia doesn’t understand where all this hostility comes from on Molly’s part. Then again, Mia doesn’t really understand much of anything, although she has a talent for detecting food and the best napping spots no matter where she finds herself.

But the star of the show has just arrived: our daughter Matilda, whom we also call Mattie. She’s the gift I never knew I wanted my entire life, and now that she’s here, I want to share everything this miraculous experience of fatherhood has brought me, not only with her, but with you. I hope you enjoy the ride.
